But when the first of the cartoon Gorillaz appeared on the video screens - bassist Murdoc Niccals, for the record – the crowd’s energy zoomed even higher. The night opened with “M1 A1” and “Last Living Souls,” a pair of older, relatively straightforward rock songs, during which Albarn stepped to the front of the stage to urge the fans to get up and move, though most already were. It isn’t, as you might imagine, an easy way to stage a show, and since those first gigs in the early 2000s, Albarn and his rotating cast of musicians, singers and rappers have increasingly come to the forefront, the animation and visuals pushed to the more traditional screens above and behind the band.Įven so, a Gorillaz tour comes along only infrequently, and so the sold-out show at the Forum in Inglewood on Thursday had the air of an event around it, with more desperate fans than mercenary scalpers working the parking lots in search of tickets to only the fourth-ever official Gorillaz show in the area after one at Gibson Amphitheatre in 2010 and two nights at the Hollywood Palladium in 2002.Īnd it was oh so worth the wait, for once Albarn and the rest of this sprawling ensemble arrived on stage, all that pent-up waiting was rewarded with a terrific show that packed 28 songs into two hours, featured a dozen or so guests including hip-hop trio De La Soul, rapper and show-opener Vince Staples, and singer Jehnny Beth of Savages, and featured Hewlett’s fun and creative animations of the virtual Gorillaz. With Gorillaz, singer-songwriter Damon Albarn and comic artist Jamie Hewlett created an entire mythology around a cartoon rock quartet, committing so deeply to their concept that when the group played its first live gigs the live players performed behind a scrim on which the animated Gorillaz were projected in 3-D.
